Description

Around 8% of school-aged students have lived with a parent who has been incarcerated at some point in the student’s life. In this session, presenters will provide a broad overview of mass incarceration and parental incarceration in the United States; review research on parental incarceration related to education and school psychology; and describe recommendations for school-based practitioners in supporting students and families with incarcerated parents. Participants will have an opportunity to examine case studies related to parental incarceration and discuss strategies to support the students and families in each scenario. Join us to learn more and leave the session with resources, tip sheets, book recommendations, and further learning opportunities to better serve students with incarcerated parents in your school psychology practice! Presented by Elizabeth Shaver and Rebecca Shlafer (2025) NCSP: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
